Finding Calm Amidst Covid

When life gets me down, I make a 10-item gratitude list. The top 3 or 4 are easy, but working down the list into the 7th, 8th, 9th items is a challenge. Plus, I don’t let myself repeat anything on the list. It’s a mood boost, for certain.

It began on March 20th, 2020, with this list:

1. A husband who loves me.
2. Our daughter, who commutes from her apartment to our dining room to work each day!
3. Our future daughter-in-law!
4. Two sons who persevere, despite the new challenges.
5. A warm day today.
6. Clean and groomed doggos.
7. Friends who check in with me.
8. Personal strength to refrain from stress eating.
9. The ability to shut off the TV.
10. A chance meeting with a former student in front of our home!

Every day the list was posted to Facebook, and ALWAYS accompanied by a sarcastic cartoon, to lift the spirits of those on my my friends list. I wasn’t sure anyone even cared; but it wasn’t published for them. It was a purely selfish move, on my part, to force myself to look at the good, instead of the cascade of negative news. And it worked. I don’t do it every day anymore, but still try to, with some regularity, on the days when I need to shake up my mood. TRY IT!

Quarantine Day 14:
Today, I am grateful for:

  1. A crazy-fun ⛈thunderstorm yesterday, when we were cozy in our home.
  2. The music of Neil Young. 🎹
  3. The questioning, respectful people in the grocery stores that have the same look in their eyes that I do: “Are YOU safe?”
  4. Sparkling mineral water.
  5. Making homemade pizza 🍕every Sunday with Warren, who makes the BEST dough!
  6. My mother-in-law, who is 79, lives independently, and is so, so brave. 🌺
  7. The Zoom “virtual brunch” with our weekly brunch group yesterday. ☕️🍳
  8. Warren’s cockeyed sense of humor that lightens my load each day. 😂😂😂
  9. “Better Call Saul.”
  10. All of YOU! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🤍🖤!

Quarantine Day 25: Today, I am grateful for:

  1. The motivation and positivity to take an hour long, brisk walk, alone.
  2. Really, really, good, poached salmon for lunch and dinner on the same day.
  3. Symmetry.
  4. A husband, who never, NEVER complains! (I swear this is the truth! Clauss kids, back me up!)
  5. The knowledge that everything takes time.
  6. MSG, that is showing old time Sabre’s games every weeknight.
  7. The inspiration of “Minimalist Kitchen” and “Sprouted Kitchen.”
  8. The steady, predictability of my husband’s habits.
  9. Our Temper-Pedic bed that never, ever, lets me down.
  10. All of YOU! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🤍🖤!

Quarantine Day 40: Today, I am grateful for:

  1. My connection with K.C. and the growing and evolving friendship between us.
  2. D’Avolio take-out pizza last night!
  3. Being able to abandon my Pysanky Egg project because it just isn’t the right time for precision. 😢 And that’s okay!
  4. Faith.
  5. Hope.
  6. Love.
  7. The beautiful fog surrounding our neighborhood this morning.
  8. My teacher friends who are rocking distance learning these days!
  9. A very early morning trip to the grocery this morning.
  10. All of YOU! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍🤎🖤!

YOU NEED TO TRY THIS. IT WORKS.
