Our Story


The All-American diet is killing us. We can’t stay true to the red, white and blue (red meat, white refined flour and sugar, blue mood) any longer. When my husband was diagnosed with high-enough blood pressure to warrant medication, and when I have ignored my pre-diabetic state for too long, it’s time for a major shift in our eating plan. Denial is a great place to live, but we won’t live for long if we stay in Denial. We booked a high-speed jet right outa there.

So for the first time ever, we cleaned out every bad thing in the kitchen. And We do mean EVERY item. No more whites. (Rice, pasta, potatoes, flour.) Many bags of groceries donated. Our old way of eating is gone for good. Welcome to Kitchen 2.0! It’s a revised, reorganized, redirected revolution!

We now cook with whole, fresh ingredients at every meal. Homemade red sauce. Shred our own cheese. Whole grain breads. Homemade stock. No more chemicals and additives.

But where are our online role models? We thought for SURE there would be loads of cooking blogs that we could get ideas from. WHERE is the cooking blog for scratch cooking that emphasizes the trifecta of healthy cooking?

1. Low sodium
2. Low in saturated fats
3. Only whole carbs; no refined carbs.

PLUS, our goal is for every meal to be under 500 calories, under 30g carbohydrates, under 20g unsaturated fat, and under 500g of sodium. That’s a hard sell, until I realized that it’s not only possible, it tastes amazing to eat so healthy!

I’m sort of legendary in my house for being able to find ANYTHING online, but this one stumps me. There are plenty of recipes out there, but not in one place. And they all focus on only one or two aspects, but not all three.

So we will create it here, one meal at a time. It’s a daunting task. Changing it up this severely is frightening, and we’re not in a good mental place when we arrive home at 6pm and need to create something appealing, healthy and tasty if we don’t have a plan beforehand.

Update: In the 7 months since we began this journey, my husband and I have lost over 85 lbs. between us, he no longer has high blood pressure, and is off his medication!
